Juan Dolio Beach has the finest public beach area on Dominican Republic’s south coast located 40 minutes east of Santo Domingo. The bay has consistent swells and breaks making it a surprisingly good overall surf location for all levels who want to enjoy surfing and body boarding. The sandy bottom allows swimmers and surfers to walk comfortably out into the waves.
Charlie Salas runs Island Surf, where you can get lessons or simply just rent a board or kayak. Charlie is well known in Mexico as “the professor” of surfing and is a great addition to Juan Dolio. You can stop by after 10:30 a.m. to schedule lessons no matter what the age or give him a call to ask any questions you might have.

Boogie, or Body boarding is simpler than surf-boarding and can be a lot of fun for all ages. Below 8 year old Elian has provided some advice on how to get the best from this increasingly popular sport as well as a video of himself boogie boarding (for his first time!) on Juan Dolio beach. You can call Charlie at the number above for more details about renting a board and getting instructions.
Put wax on the body (or boogie) board where you put your body and hands because it keeps you from sliding off the board
Next put a leash or strap on your ankle that is attached to the body board.
Now you are ready to ride.
Go to the water where the big waves are.
When you are where the big waves are, you sit
on the board with balance. Try not to fall off.
Now you wait for the wave to come.
To get to ride the wave you lay down and paddle with both arms and feet.
Keep your legs straight and hands paddling. When the wave has you,
get in position with your feet close together and hands holding the board
tightly. Ride the wave to the shore and have fun!!!
Bordering the beach are several restaurants and bars serving everything from fried fish to Italian & Mexican cuisine.
